Manny is Coming

Manchester is a new dog. His arrival to us is scheduled for the 22nd. I will be picking him up on my way back from visiting my mom in Tennessee. Manny will be the first "new" dog in our house since Buddy was added in March of 1994. Buddy's job was to help me get through a very tough loss of one of my hunting buddies...Buck. Buddy did his job well. He enabled me to move on and now I am an old dog. As an old dog, I will be breaking out my training gear and going through all the stages with Manny that puppies (poopies) go through. The best advice I ever got was to focus on "one day at a time". There will be mistakes. There will be successes. Either way, we will get there and be ready for the hunt next year.

JB: FYI I've sent the info re: Bubba's breeder to David. Hope he is able to work something out. I'll bet you're anxious to get Manny home. I'm wondering: since he's from Tennessee, will he bark with a southern accent?

I don't know if he will bark with a southern accent, but I bet he will be easy to breed. I should have no problem finding a cousin for him.

Speaking of hunting next year. We might want to take a look at the connections we made this year. We hunted the Tall grass prairie and got a lot of quail. We hunted the crick east of the farm and got quail and flushed a covey of prairie chickens. We hunted the WMA where Scooby made his first pheasant point (hen). We hunted Dan's place (with permission) and got two pheasants. We hunted behind C and D's and because the corn was up...got nothing. We hunted the farm and saw deer but no birds (that will change next year). We hunted the WMA with the food plot way, way in the back and saw some quail and doves. Half the group hunted Hyaks place but I think it was too soon after the combining. We had a lot of places with promise. Having re-established contacts with the farmers should help us increase our success. In addition, we discussed driving up to northeast nebraska. The birds there are very plentiful, but it is about a four hour drive from the Martel Motel (according to mapquest). I have hunted there before and had fantastic success. I would highly recommend the additional drive provided we add a couple more days to the trip. Believe me...limiting by 9am with 9 hunters (3 birds each and NO HENS) is a blast! The shell vest gets pretty heavy with about 10 pounds of birds in it.
